Edward Lear (1812-1888, painter, humorist and traveller) toured Crete in 1864.
His travels took him from Hania, across the north coast to Rethymnon. He then sailed to Heraklion and journeyed south beyond Timbaki, visiting many of the sites and surrounding villages until eventually he made his way back to the north coast.
During his journey, he kept a diary, and made many drawings.
This series of paintings by Mick Hollingworth uses the drawings of Edward Lear as his starting point.
